Choice architecture – a cost-effective type of activism

A cost-effective type of activism (in terms of the ratio between impact and time required): every time you see a site that offers a plant-based option but has an architecture that does not serve this, ask the site owner to change this.

Tell the company it offends you as a customer.

What is a website architecture that does not serve a plant-based diet?

Mainly a meat default (you shouldn't expect the company to turn it into a plant-based default but rather to change it to non-default: requiring you to actively choose between options).

But also:

Adding friction (increasing the number of clicks required, hiding options, infinite scrolling) to choosing the plant-based option.

-Putting plant-based options in small print.

Framing: names like Classical meal (for the meat option) vs Other dietary requirements (including a plant-based option).

-Any process where it is easy to miss the plant-based option.
